Away from Home

Postcard Project (2021)

While working on my thesis, Away from Home became a small personal project. I studied abroad in London in the Spring of 2020 and during reading week, my friends and I travelled to Budapest, Vienna, and Prague. I came home early due to the pandemic. I wanted to remember when life was more “normal”, so I created 3 different 4”x6” postcards with my favorite image (taken on my film camera) from each city.

I sold the postcard set for $8 and sold them individually for $3. Due to the rapid increase of Asian hate crimes this year, specifically after the Atlanta Spa shooting, I wanted to give back somehow. I donated 50% of the proceeds to Send Chinatown Love. It is an organization that focuses on supporting businesses in NYC’s Chinatown since the beginning of the pandemic. I call Chinatown home and I want it to still be here years from now.

The project was two weeks longs and we were able to donate $234 to Send Chinatown Love. The money was donated to their gift-a-meal option, where vouchers are created. The vouchers redeem meals. They are donated to community members that distribue them to individuals in need. By donating to their gift-a-meal program, it supports the merchants Send Chinatown Love work with, as well as supporting those dealing with food insecurity.
